Project description

The REECOL project unites eleven partners, encompassing research institutions and industrial companies, from five European countries. This collaboration aims to foster close cooperation in addressing the long-term environmental sustainability of transitioning coal regions. REECOL focuses on significantly enhancing approaches to ecologically rehabilitating post-mining sites, considering factors such as the extent of ecosystem degradation, future land utilization, solution availability, and the influence of climate change.
The project’s primary objectives include the development and testing of new and innovative solutions for land reclamation, revegetation, and ecosystem restoration in carefully selected case study areas within transitioning regions. Furthermore, the partnership will establish measures to facilitate effective short- and long-term monitoring of reclamation processes, utilizing diverse biological, geochemical, and remote sensing technologies.
The proposed solutions seek to establish resilient ecosystems that effectively combat soil erosion, enhance water quality, safeguard wildlife habitats, and improve the aesthetic appeal of former mining sites for alternative purposes. Additionally, the project will introduce a novel certification methodology to evaluate the ecological reclamation of post-mining areas, identifying industry best practices. The industrial partners within the project will validate this certification method.
By providing cutting-edge research, the REECOL project aims to directly and positively impact coal regions in transition. It supports the adoption of sustainable ecological rehabilitation options that ensure long-term viability and yield positive socio-ecological outcomes.
