Project description

The aim of the project was to study hydrogen production technology by underground gasification of coal in a georeactor at a research stand under “in situ” field conditions. The project assessed, inter alia, impact of the technology on air, water and the stability of geological seams.

As part of the activities carried out by Poltegor-Instytut, the following results has been obtained:

– geological deposits accompanying lignite deposits and forming the walls of an underground gasification reactor as well as introducing sorption-binding materials into the gasifier will limit migration of harmful pollutants that occur in the process,

– geological deposits surrounding the coal seam will be sufficient insulation for gases produced in the underground brown coal gasification process, provided that their thickness is sufficient to protect the higher layers against moisture loss,

– after the brown coal gasification process land subsidence will occur, and its size will vary and will depend on the thickness of coal seams and silts overlying the coal seams
